Cabin Lake Wilderness Base-camp

Our base camp in located on secluded spring fed lake locally known as "Cabin Lake".  It is a volcanic ash lake which is not uncommon in the southern Yukon.  A large volcanic eruption near the border of Alaska more than 1000 years ago blanketed much of the Yukon and Alaska with a layer of ash varying from a few inches to over a foot thick in places.  Where it fell on lakes it settled to the bottom and gave the lake a white bottom similar in look to the white sandy bottom of the ocean in the Caribbean and creates similar aqua-blue and green water hues.  Our lake is rich in marine life with an abundant population of microscopic fresh water shrimp, and a large minnow population, which sustains the arctic charr population nicely.

Cabin Lake is surrounded by Yukon wilderness.  There are no other buildings on this mile long lake, and we are located 12 km down a dirt road from the Alaska Highway. Hiking to a local ridge 800 ft above our cabin affords views of the surrounding landscape.  In the late fall and winter Cabin Lake plays host frequently to non-migratory caribou and the wolves that are constantly on their heels.  Beavers, otters, loons and eagles are often spotted on the lake as well as the occasional moose.
