Big Salmon River Attributes:
- Multi-day hiking accessible from the upper portions of the river
- Starts by traveling through a chain of three lakes
- Excellent fishing
- Two small portages required around logs jams in the river ( under 200m)
- No difficult white water but does have lots of sweepers and tight corners in the upper portion of the river
- Not recommended until spring flood waters have receded due to log jams and numerous tight corners with sweepers
- Joins the Yukon River for the last two days of the trip and ends in Carmacks
- Can continue on past Carmacks ( normal ending point ) for an additional 8 days, paddling on the Yukon River all the way to Dawson City
The Big Salmon River is an Ideal Choice For:
- Beginner or intermediate paddlers looking for a medium length wilderness canoe trip with excellent fishing, diverse terrain ( lakes and rivers)
- Paddlers looking for something a bit more challenging than the Yukon River, but still appropriate for complete beginners ( if guided)
- Great for families with older children
