Fishing Clothing & Gear
- Waders: A
good pair of neoprene or breathable chest waders with sturdy boots.
Allow enough room inside to layer up or down depending on the weather.
For safety, we recommend you bring a wading belt that offers back
support.
- Fishing Jacket: A good all around fishing jacket with hood and pockets is what we will be wearing much of the time. All 4 seasons can be experienced in one afternoon during our travels on this northern river.
- Rods:
At a minimum, bring two rods, one set up for 5-6wt and the other 8wt, in a 9 to 10 foot length. With the increasing popularity of trout spey rods, a good spey or switch rod in the 6,7,8 weight category is ideal for working areas with little back casting room.
- Reels: Reels should be large enough to hold 150-200yards of backing.
- Lines: A good floating line for both sizes of rods. Also, a 200gr-300gr streamer line such as ones made by Teeny, Rio or 3M. For the spey or switch rods, the Beulah Elixir or Tonic lines with a full complement of multi-tips would be perfect.
- Flies: Many of the flies can be purchased at our fly shop prior to departing Whitehorse. A variety of attractor dry flies such as stimulators, convertibles and caddis patterns in 10-14 for the grayling. For the bulls count on articulated streamers, troutruders and sculpins in sizes 1/0-6 to do the trick. A variety of caddis nymphs and soft hackle patterns would also be deadly additions to the arsenal. We can also make up a custom selection prior to your arrival. Contact Headwaters 2 Ocean Troutfitters for more information.
- Leaders:
A selection of 4lb through 15lb 9ft leaders will be perfect for the other species. To lock in on depth, a selection of intermediate, slow and fast sink poly leaders in 10 to 15 foot lengths are recommended. Of course, spools of tippet material sized 4lb through 15lb will cover all of the situations likely to be encountered.
- Tackle Bags:
A good chest pack or vest will be necessary for the trip. A good plan
would be to have a base duffel from which to organize the days fly
boxes and tackle would allow you to gear up according to species and
water fished.
- Accessories: A good set of barb smashers, a hook release tool, a pair of tippet nippers and a good set of polarized glasses for spotting fish.
- A fly tying kit with vices, tools and a host of materials will be available for evening tying sessions.
- PLEASE NOTE: If your have any questions about this fishing gear list, please do not hesitate to contact Steve, your fly fishing guide through his website at Headwaters 2 Ocean Troutfitters. Also, if there are pieces of gear which you would like to rent or purchase, you can discuss this with Steve as he has a pretty large selection of gear to rent or purchase and prices will be dependent on the quality of gear you select.
