Robert Postma: Yukon Photography tour, yukon photography vacation, yukon photography workshop

Ever wondered what the professionals carry in the field to capture the world in their unique way? Well-known Yukon photographer Robert Postma takes us on a tour of his trusted gear.

Being Geared For Success!

             by Robert Postma

Over the years, I have numerous requests to know what type of gear I use on a regular basis. I have always been a Canon user only because my first real job was delivering photocopiers and fax machines for that company and the president gave me a camera for my efforts. Nice guy! Anyway, I have built my backpack around their equipment for this reason and also because the name sounds powerful. But I am a little quirky. Anyway, I digress. Listed below is what I typically carry with me on a backpacking or canoeing trip, when I travel alone.

     The Gear:

  • Canon 5D Mark2 camera and a waterproof housing for underwater shots
  • Canon 24mm TS II lens
  • Canon 28-300mm IS lens
  • Possible 16-35mm lens
  • Compact photo storage unit to conserve batteries in camera
  • Extra batteries for camera
  • Remote Cable trigger (so as not to touch camera during shooting, better sharpness)
  • Various graduated neutral density filters to fit Cokin P holder
  • Circular warming polarizer (to remove glare, deepen blues and "warm" the light)
  • Carbon fibre tripod (very light, compact and wonderful to have)
  • Angle view finder (for getting low and odd angles for photos)
  • Numerous memory cards ranging from 16GB to 4GB

I also make sure to have bug and bear spray handy BUT...never spray bug repellent near your camera as it can eat through the lens coatings and your waterproofing on your jackets and pants...not good. Also, use bear spray as directed, it does not get sprayed on you...that also is not good not to mention very uncomfortable.  Carry good, warm waterproof clothing as the Yukon's weather is very unpredictable, could snow in the summer months at higher elevations. A sense of adventure and humour is a must as well.

There you have it. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to ask.

Until then, happy shooting!

About the Author:  Robert Postma

Robert Postma: Yukon Photography tour, yukon photography vacation, yukon photography workshopRobert's passion and respect for nature began at a very young age. While growing up in Ontario, his mother would come into his room during the wee morning hours to wake him and his brothers when a thunderstorm was approaching. They would then head out to the garage with lawnchairs in hand to watch the storm front as it unrolled itself over the corn fields towards them. It's fury struck a chord within him which led to the natural progression of capturing natures power and subtleties on film to share with others.

Professional accomplishments include publication in various magazines including National Geographic, Canadian Geographic, Up Here, Our Canada, Mountain Equipment Co-op and Astronomy, brochures, annual reports and calendars. Also winner of the Show us your Canada photo contest in 2004 and 2008 and the Up Here annual photo contests.
