Optional Fishing Gear ( if you wish to bring your own gear for fly fishing )
- Waders: A
good pair of neoprene or breathable chest waders with sturdy boots may allow you to do some extra fishing from our camps in the evening.
Allow enough room inside to layer up or down depending on the weather.
For safety, we recommend you bring a wading belt that offers back
support.
- Fishing Jacket: A good all around fishing jacket with hood and pockets is what we will be wearing. All 4 seasons can be experienced in one afternoon during our travels in the Arctic.
- Rods:
We will be tackling grayling all the way up to monster pike. At a
minimum, bring two rods, one set up for 5-6wt and the other 8-10wt, in
a 9 to 10 foot length. With the increasing popularity of trout spey
rods, a good spey or switch rod in the 5,6,7 weight category is ideal
for working areas with little back casting room.
- Reels: Reels should be large enough to hold 150-200yards of backing.
- Lines:
A good floating line for both sizes of rods. Also, a 200gr streamer
line such as ones made by Teeny, Rio or 3M. A full sink streamer line
for lake fishing. For the spey or switch rods, the Beulah Elixir lines
with a full complement of multi-tips would be perfect.
- Flies: Many of the flies can be purchased at our fly shop prior to departing Whitehorse.
- Leaders:
Several wire trace pike leaders of 20lb strength will be necessary to
fish for the toothy quarry. A selection of 4lb through 15lb 9ft leaders
will be perfect for the other species. To lock in on depth, a selection
of intermediate, slow and fast sink poly leaders in 10 to 15 foot
lengths are recommended. Of course, spools of tippet material sized 4lb
through 15lb will cover all of the situations likely to be encountered.
- Tackle Bags:
A good chest pack or vest will be necessary for the trip. A good plan
would be to have a base duffel from which to organize the days fly
boxes and tackle would allow you to gear up according to species and
water fished.
- Accessories: A good set of barb smashers, a hook release tool, a pair of tippet nippers and a good set of polarized glasses for spotting fish.
- PLEASE NOTE: If your have any questions about fy fishing gear, please do not hesitate to contact Steve at Headwaters 2 Ocean Troutfitters. He has the best selection of fly fishing gear in the Yukon and is very familiar with the fishing opportunities of Snafu Lake.
