Wild Things!Yukon Wild Lynx

We have experienced an unusually high number of lynx sightings this spring around the Carcross, Yukon area.  Brook's Dad, Ken Blewett, managed to capture these images one sunny spring afternoon.  This lynx was hunting for some type of rodent under the snow at the edge of the highway and the presence of humans did not dissuade it from the task.  After several minutes it seemed to decide that it was not going to succeed at grasping dinner and walked away with "cool cat" sophistication.  Lynx population trends closely mirror the snowshoe hare, their main prey species, and indeed a higher than usual amount of snowshoe hare tracks were observed this year anecdotally. We will enjoy the more frequent lynx sightings while we can because once the snowshoe hare population crash occurs, we might all be ten years the wiser before lynx populations are this plentiful again.
